If you look county by county in Texas, you will see that the bigger cities all went blue (Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, El Paso). However, there is a lot of urban sprawl in TX too, which means a lot of highly populated suburbs and exurbs which went red. It think these sub- and exurban voters are the reason for the reddening of the state. Also, Harris county has a large black population, but also a lot of whites in the pro-Obama demographic (including myself).
